In the middle of a dense forest and gigantic granite rocks of the Sintra Mountain Natural Park, lays the Capuchos Convent, an austere Franciscan monastery, with minimal impact on the natural environment and with an extremely simplistic design.

The construction dates back to 1560 and the chosen location, allowed the resident friars complete segregation from the outside world, living in a quiet atmosphere, but at the same time with little comfort.

The set of small chapels, rooms and cells, are all connected by very narrow passages, resembling small caves. The beds are made of stone and the rooms, reminiscent of prison cells, are covered with cork and practically devoid of protection against the harsh winters.

Frei Honorio, was a famous monk who lived here and spent 15 of his years in isolation, living until the age of 100 years. The complex was abandoned after the religious orders were abolished in 1830.

A visit to this quaint monastery is an experience reminiscent of “Alice in Wonderland,” as we begin to explore the maze of cells, chapels and caves. The surrounding space conveys a peaceful and idyllic atmosphere. This is away from the usual tourist routes, but whoever knows Sintra, considers it, undoubtedly, as one of the best historical monuments in the region.

Open every day from 09:30 to 20:00 (summer time) and from 10:00 to 17:00 (winter).

Instead of leaving the house to buy a package of the famous Queijadas of Sintra, why not make it a family team event and, in a fast and funny way, bake the famous pastry Queijada de Sintra in XL format?

Divide tasks by two groups, one takes care of the dough and another of the filling.

Pasta:

1 egg
1 pinch of fine salt
350g unleavened wheat flour
75 g butter

Filling:

6 small fresh cheeses
4 gems
350g of brown sugar
3 tablespoons unleavened wheat flour
2 tablespoons cinnamon (coffee)

Preparation of Queijada de Sintra

Heat the oven to 200ºC.

Pasta:

In a cup, knead with flour, salt, and butter. Add the egg and continue to knead.

After a homogeneous mixture, wrap in foil and take to the refrigerator for 1 h, roll out the dough, preferably over a stone table, previously sprinkled with flour.

Spread the dough until it has a thin thickness (2mm), and then line the dough in a pie dish.

Filling:

Crush the fresh cheeses into a bowl, adding sugar, egg yolks and cinnamon.

Add the flour and wrap until a homogeneous mixture is obtained.

Put the filling over the pie dish with the dough and bake for about 60 ‘.

After about 30 minutes reduce the oven temperature to 180 ° C.

Let it cool and then you can unmold your Queijada de Sintra XL.

Why are Colares vineyards so different?

Everything is different, the weather and the coastline – strong maritime winds, having the vineyards, as sole protection, palisades made of natural wood. Also unique is the fact that the vineyards are planted into the sand ground, without any help of exterior grafts.

Sturdy and resistant!

Colares is a unique wine region in Europe, with wines produced from grapes with very special characteristics and marketed through century-old wine cellars, for example the Adega Viúva Gomes, located in Almoçageme.

This wine region is located at the westernmost point of Continental Europe, in the municipality of Sintra, near the Atlantic coast, covering the parishes of Colares, S. João das Lampas and S. Martinho.

The DOP region of Colares was formalized in 1908, although there are records of wine activity since 1255, by order of D. Afonso III.

The wine-growing region of Colares is regulated through the Institute of Vine and Wine, and national legislation (DL nº246 / 94 of 29 September).

Portugal has 31 DOP zones and Colares is part of the Lisbon area, with two wine grape varieties:

Ramisco (red grape varieties) with a minimum total stage of 21 months, producing a ruby wine, quite rough in its early stages of youth, but full of aroma as it ages.

Malvasia (white grape varieties) with a minimum total stage of 9 months, being a citrus wine, perfumed, fresh, with fruit taste, that improves with age.

Heritage of Sintra and Portugal, the wines of Colares are progressively known in the national and international market, and the wineries have played an important role in its dissemination.

Sintra mountain is a small massif – the Roman promontory of the moon – set before the ocean which climbs up to 528 meters at Cruz Alta. Once the domain of bushland the mountain has changed its features after the introduction of several forest essences. Today, in certain areas you can breath the air of a dense forest which contrasts with the cover of the coastal strip or the limestone platform in São João das Lampas. The exotic vegetation reaches its higher expression in the Pena and Monserrate Parks.

Cliffs, small arribas, beaches, dunes and the Rocha muzzle draw a seashore that amazes with its vigour and there are even dinosaur footprints tracks (Praia Grande do Rodízio).

Besides countless examples of erudite architecture – the Palácio da Vila (Village Palace) with its unique chimneys is the symbol of the Park – and with its well preserved gardens, the Sintra-Cascais Nature Park (14.583 ha) houses within it curious manifestations of popular architecture.

The undeniable scenic value associated with this protected area was recognized by UNESCO by integrating part of the mountain and Sintra’s historical centre in the World Heritage List with the category of “cultural landscape”.

This area has been inhabited since the earliest days of antiquity, and is therefore much appreciated by geologists. At the beach “Praia Grande”, you can observe an important track of dinosaur footprints, present in a layer of almost vertical chalk of the south cliff and still in these shore-sea zones, you can observe remarkable fossil formations and limestone fields eroded by the ocean. Also worth noting is the “Azenhas do Mar“, a picturesque village that rises on an impressive nature cliff, built with great human skill.

Apart from Praia Grande, there are many other beaches of excellent quality and stunning nature beauty. These includes: Adraga, Abano, Samarra, Magoito, Praia das Maçãs or Guincho. In addition to the relaxation they can provide, they are excellent for surfing, windsurfing or body-boarding.

In the hillside, further inland, there are some picturesque rural areas, including the Casa da Capela, Sintra Houses’ lodging offer, set in a place where the north is marked by dry stone walls separating different agricultural fields and protect them from the maritime winds (the wine area of Colares) and to the south, the slope of the mountain range of Sintra rises, populated by magnificent rails along the immense forest.

The Sintra Mountain  is covered with lush vegetation, giving rise to a micro-climate that makes it so special. The fresh and varied aromas accompany the hikers, making this an unforgettable nature experience. Throughout the Natural Park, the richness of the Palaces, imposing of the Castles, or the singularity of constructions like the Convent of the Capuchos, surprise the visitors and are obligatory points of visit. Among these are: Pena Palace, Monserrate Palace, Moorish Castle and Quinta da Regaleira.

The Pena Palace stands at the top of one of the highest rocky peaks of the Sintra mountain, and on a clear day can be easily observed from a large part of the Lisbon metropolitan area. This palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, also constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world.

The history of this palace dates back to 1493, when King John II, accompanied by his wife, Queen Leonor, made a pilgrimage to the place to fulfill a vow. His successor, King Manuel I, also liked this shrine very much and ordered the construction of a monastery in this place that was donated to the Order of St. Jerome. For centuries, the Pena was a small quiet place for meditation, with a maximum of eighteen monks.

“This is the true garden of Klingsor and there, up above, is the castle of the holy grail”.
Richard Strauss

In the 18th century, mainly during the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, the monastery was practically reduced to ruins, escaping the chapel and its works of marble and alabaster.

In 1838, King Fernando II proposed to transform the remains of the monastery into a palace that would serve as summer residence for the Portuguese royal family. The commission for the reconstruction of the romantic style was given to lieutenant general and mining engineer Wilhelm Ludwig Vovon Eschwege, a German amateur architect. The construction took place between 1842-1854. King Ferdinand II and Queen Mary II intervened decisively in matters of decoration and symbolism, suggesting the inclusion of arches of vaults, medieval and Islamic elements.

After the death of D. Fernando II, the palace passed to the possession of its second wife Elisa Hensler, the Countess of Edla. This, sold the palace to King Louis and in 1889 was bought by the Portuguese State. The last queen of Portugal, Queen Amelia, spent her last night in the palace before leaving the country for exile.

Structurally, the Pena Palace can be divided into four sections:
The foundations and the surrounding walls, with two entrances, one of them with a drawbridge; the restored structure of the old convent, with the clock tower; the wing of the arches in front of the chapel and the area of the palace proper, with its cylindrical bastion.

Inside, many of the elements of the former monastery have been preserved, including the cloister, the dining room, the sacristy and the chapel.

King Ferdinand II, also ordered that the Pena Park be erected in the style of the romantic gardens of the time, with trees and plants from all over the globe. In this way, the mild and humid climate of the Sintra hills was used to create an exotic park with more than 500 species of different trees.

This palace and its extensive park are full of wonderful places to discover, which make the visitor, travel in a fantastic history of enchanted fairies and castles.

Open every day of the year, except December 25th and January 1st

Quinta da Regaleira is one of the main attractions of Sintra, born of the eccentric creativity of an entomologist named Carvalho Monteiro, with the help of the Italian architect Luigi Manini, this property includes an amalgam of architectural styles sprinkled with symbols related to alchemy, masonry, Knights Templar, Rosicrucians and secret societies.

The palace of Quinta da Regaleira, also known as “The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire“, is a five-storey mansion with a mix of Roman, Gothic, Renaissance and Manueline styles. The surrounding gardens allude to fantasy: they are made up of caves, fountains, statues, ponds, underground tunnels, and a deep, moss-covered Initiation Well, an ancient site of Masonic rituals.

Of the various architectural structures present, stands out in front of the main facade of the palace, a Roman Catholic chapel. It’s architecture is similar to the palace and the interior of the chapel is richly decorated with frescoes and stained glass. Among others, the paintings contain representations of Teresa de Ávila and Santo António, surrounded by elements related to the Portuguese discoveries and staves. An exotic but undeniably beautiful combination.

Quinta da Regaleira is open to the public every day from 10:00.

Portugal is located on the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula, it’s a fascinating varied country and also, one of the most visited due to it’s idyllic climate, affordable travel costs and exceptional attractions.

Portugal’s varied geography ranges from the verdant mountains and vineyards of the North, to the rolling farmland and medieval villages of the Central region, till the glamorous beaches of Algarve along the southern coastline.

It is one of the oldest nations in Europe, an ancient kingdom defended by hilltop castles, with walled stone-built villages, that are worth a visit

The two main cities, Lisbon and Porto, show the role that Portugal had as a maritime world superpower, they’re authentic “museum cities”, however, these places have some of the best clubs in Europe and a bold modern architecture.

Walking further into the interior of Portugal, we will discover endless possibilities: from touring wine estates to walking, cycling or kayaking down inland rivers, discover amazing hiking trails through mountains and forests. However, it’s the coast line, that turns out to be more attractive: from cliff-covered coves to endless expanses of sandy dunes, we’ll rarely be far from finding a gorgeous beach.

For the surfing community, the east coast boasts some of the best spots in the world to practice. To the south, the calmer and warmer waters of the Algarve offer a relaxed and very pleasant beach experience.

Portugal also has 2 archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean, Azores and Madeira, both with unique lush landscapes and a high quality gastronomy.

Definitely one of the best destinations in Europe: great food, lovely people, incredible coast lines, varied natural beauty spots… all in all, a marvelous and peaceful country!
